This is a tough, easy to grow herbaceous perennial that has a clumping rosette like habit and is native to the West Indies, Southern Mexico and Guatemala.  It has thick, strappy succulent leaves that are dark green on top and purple underneath.
 
All year round, white flowers occur inside of purple boat shaped bracts in the leaf axils, fruits follow the flowers and they are capsules containing two seeds.
 
Best grown in rich well drained soil in subtropical and tropical regions in full sun to part shade, feed with a slow release fertiliser.
This plant can cause skin irritation to dogs and humans so be careful when handling and keep away from dogs if they tend to lie on plants or eat plants.
 
This is a colourful low growing plant that can spread over a large area over time, can be grown in containers, looks great planted en masse or in garden beds.
