Melaleuca spathulata, commonly known as the Pom Pom Honey Myrtle, is a small rounded shrub to approximately 1m height and width and occurs naturally on gravelly sand in heath and shrubland in SW Western Australia.
The dark green leaves are thickly textured, obovate to spathulate and from 6 to 8mm long, the foliage is held on slender rigid upright branches that have an attractive contorted appearance, with the light grey papery bark contrasting well with the dark foliage.
The profuse mauve purple flowers are Pom Pom shaped and are borne in small globular heads to 1.5cm in diameter and appear in the Spring and early Summer and make a delightful display.The tiny fruits are borne in small, ovoid heads about 8 mm in length.
This is a frost hardy species that is ideal for a rockery, in a tub or as a small feature.
It is best in full sun in well drained soil.
