Feijoa sellowiana syn Acca sellowiana - Pineapple Guava / Guavasteen - 25 seeds
Feijoa sellowiana is a South American evergreen native edible fruit species that grows to 4m tall with a dense and bushy habit. It has dull green leaves and in Spring to Summer a profusion of flowers with pinkish white petals and prominent red stamens cover the shrub, these are followed by an oblong green fruit ripening in Autumn with tough skin with aromatic yellow but gritty flesh - delicious raw or cooked into jam. Note that 2 plants are needed to produce fruit.
The shrub grows with a single trunk or can be trained as an espalier along wires, as an informal hedge or as a pruned hedge, windbreak, a screen for privacy or just as an ornamental as a garden specimen.
Best grown in full sun in humus rich well drained soil. Water well when fruiting and mulch well, feed with a balanced slow release fertiliser in Spring.
Can prune to shape after fruiting - this can also increase pollination and fruiting.
Attracts birds, bees and other insects and mammals - fruit fly can be an issue.
