Eucalyptus tetraptera, commonly known as the Square Fruited or Four Winged Mallee is an attractive fast growing small Eucalyptus to approximately 3.5m tall and has large thick glossy green lanceolate leaves up to 20cm long by 5cm wide and features square red calyx and flowers in the Spring and Summer and large brilliant red four winged red fruits that are highly decorative.
Another of the ornamental Western Australian varieties, Eucalyptus tetraptera is reasonably hardy in well drained positions on the coast and tablelands and thrives in poor sandy soils and will take most lighter well drained soils. It is a lignotuberous species (regenerating after fire from a woody bulbous root base) and is drought tolerant. It is moderately frost hardy to about 0°C, but can be grown in cooler climates as an indoor container specimen with pruning and shaping.
This is a very unusual Eucalyptus that has year round interest with its large glossy foliage, long lasting ornamental pods and Mallee form.
