Eucalyptus regnans, commonly known as the Mountain Ash is a very large Eucalyptus from the cool rainforests of Tasmania and southern Victoria and is the world's largest flowering tree! Only the (non-flowering) Californian Redwood Sequoia sempervirens is taller. An Eucalyptus regnans in the Andromeda reserve, in the Styx valley in Tasmania has been confirmed as the world's tallest known flowering tree. The tree which was originally measured in 1962 as having a height of 98.8m, was re-measured recently and found to be 97m. Trees of this age and size have massive buttressed trunks many metres in circumference.Mountain Ash features a straight, grey trunk, smooth-barked except for a rough basal cuff of bark usually from 5 to 15m, the foliage is falcate (sickle-shaped) to lanceolate, 9 to 14cm long and 1.5 to 2.5cm wide, green to grey green with a reddish petiole. The white flowers are produced in the Summer months in clusters, each flower about 1cm diameter with a ring of numerous white stamens and the fruit is a capsule 5 to 9mm long and 4 to 7mm wide.Eucalyptus regnans is a major hardwood timber species and has been and is still extensively logged.Eucalyptus regnans occurs in cool, mostly mountainous areas to 1000m altitude with very high rainfall - over 1200mm per year, with a growth of more than a metre a year a good specimen in suitable conditions can reach 65m in 50 years. This is a frost hardy species that requires a wet climate with preferably deep fertile soil. This is not a lignotuberous species and regeneration is from seed which germinates readily.50 premium quality seeds shipped on receipt of cleared funds.
