Eucalyptus pachyphylla - Red Bull Mallee - 100 seeds
Myrtaceae - no shipment to Western Australia or Tasmania
Eucalyptus pachyphylla, commonly known as the Red Bull or Red Budded Mallee, is a small tree normally with multi-trunks arising from a lignotuber and reaches about 5m in height but is often smaller. It occurs on a widespread basis throughout the Northern Territory in the Great Sandy, Gibson and Little Sandy Deserts and east into western Queensland and west into Western Australia.
Bark is smooth pale brown, shedding in strips to reveal silvery to pale greyish white new bark. Leaves are blue-grey, lanceolate to broadly oval and creamy yellow flowers are recorded over all seasons - to some 3cm offset by commanding ruby red bud caps.
The Red Bull Mallee has not been widely cultivated but has horticultural potential for dry climates. It is frost tolerant, its small size lends itself to domestic gardens and the bark, flowers and bud caps make a excellent showing.
