Eucalyptus kruseana, commonly known as the Bookleaf Mallee or Kruse's Mallee, is a small straggly lignotuberous mallee to approximately 3m in height and more in width in its natural setting in the dry arid interior of central southern Western AustraliaBark is rough, thin, firmly held on base of trunks but shedding in ribbons along the branches in a fibrous dark grey, smooth above and bronze to coppery and dark grey below, the branchlets are white and waxy.Juvenile foliage is distinctive - rounded, opposite and a waxy silvery grey.
Eucalyptus kruseana is unusual in that the crown never develops mature foliage - all foliage from coppiced growth to the reproductive crown are juvenile in form, this is a useful and attractive feature and foliage is widely used in the floristry trade. Attractive greenish yellow flowers appear in profusion in late Summer.Bookleaf Mallee is a popular ornamental in drier parts of southern Australia and in central Australia because of its size, it is drought tolerant and mildly frost tolerant, to about -4°C in Australian conditions.
