Eucalyptus gunnii - Cider Gum / Silver Drop - 50 seeds
Myrtaceae - no shipment to Western Australia or Tasmania
The Cider Gum, Eucalyptus gunnii, is a small to medium sized woodland tree from the Tasmanian central plateau where it is often with a short massive bole and wide spreading branches.
In cultivation in other locations it is more normally an attractive straight-trunked tree with a clean appearance that can reach 25m and is excellent in high altitudes under sub alpine conditions but will also grow and thrive in hot inland districts if a good water supply is available - it requires a minimum annual rainfall of 750mm or an equivalent artificial supply.
This species is widely cultivated in Britain and colder climates overseas because of its high resistance to frost - it is one of the most frost resistant of the Eucalypts.
The bark is very attractive - often persistent to about 2m forming a thin grey to grey-pink stocking and then white and smooth. Leaves are 5 - 7cm long and 2 - 3cm wide, a round leaf of waxy blue colour changing to a more elongated rich green foliage in the older tree but if maintained as a shrub the juvenile foliage will be retained.
The plant produces a sweet sap similar to maple syrup, and is being considered for cultivation for this product and when bottled and capped, the liquid ferments and resembles apple cider, hence Cider Gum.
It is an excellent hardy shade tree that can be used as a windbreak and is a useful farm forestry species.50 premium quality pure seeds (no chaff) shipped on receipt of cleared funds.
