Grows as a straggly tree up to 10m tall, forming a lignotuber that is widespread over inland eastern Australia, central Australia and the southern fringe of the Kimberley region of WA in grassy woodland on heavy clay soils, occurring on occasionally flooded heavy soiled plains and banks of streams that flow too intermittently to support the River Red Gum in QLD, NSW, NT and SA.
 
This has rough box like bark on part or all of the trunk, sometimes extending to the largest limbs, sometimes tessellated, grey, grey - brown or blackish and the upper bark is smooth, powdery, white, cream, pale grey or pink.  
 
The juvenile leaves are lanceolate 4 - 13cm long x 0.5 - 3cm wide and are a dull blue green to blue grey or slightly glaucous and teh adult leaves are lanceolate to falcate 8 - 17cmcm long x 1 - 2.5cm wide, dull green to blue green or grey green in colour.
 
The white flowers occur in 7 buds per umbel throughout the year.
