Corymbia ptychocarpa, commonly known as the Swamp Bloodwood, is small a red to pink flowering member of the Eucalyptus family that is ideally suited to hot wet humid subtropical to tropical conditions. It is cultivated extensively and frequently used as a landscaping specimen in Brisbane and south eastern Queensland, Corymbia ptychocarpa is the dominant parent in many of the newly released red flowering hybrids.
It is a small to medium sized tree growing to a maximum of 15m in the wild but rarely exceeds 8m in cultivation. This species can be as broad as it is tall and can require some shaping because of a tendency to be unruly, but it is always highly attractive.
The very large leaves and masses of urn-shaped and attractive gumnuts are a feature of this species, along with the large, showy red to pink blooms that are produced profusely, primarily in the Summer to Autumn, but intermittently throughout the year.
In full bloom Corymbia ptychocarpa is a mass of colour and ranks amongst the very best of the flowering gums.This species is not frost tolerant, it is a tropical species suited to hot humid climates with high rainfall and it will take most soils and is best in full sun.
