The Dwarf Firewood Banksia is one of the many and varied Australian Banksias, this species has flower heads that change from pink to yellow as they develop and dry out.  They flower profusely for long periods throughout the Winter months.

The flowers make excellent long living cut flowers, and as with most Banksia is attractive to pollinating birds.  The cut Flowers are also very showy and much sought after for dried flower arrangements and this species is utilised commercially in Australia.

The fruit and the foliage are also very attractive and new growth is a pale brown produced in early Summer.

Be aware that there are two forms of Firewood Banksia - a dwarf form  to 1.5 m. x 1.5m and a much larger form.

The Firewood Banksia likes well drained soils in full or part sunlight and once established is both drought and frost tolerant, it's natural habitat is in Western Australia in deep sand in low woodland and tall shrubland with an annual rainfall of 350-900mm.

Propagation is from seed which should be sown into a standard seed raising mix and watered as required.  Plant young seedlings as soon as practical to avoid too much root disturbance, plant into well drained soil with an acidic pH of around 6.0 to 6.5.
Phosphorus fertilisers are toxic to the plant as it can take up even the smallest traces of this element.
