Acacia complanata, commonly known as the Flat Stem Wattle is normally a rounded shrub to about 3m although occasionally taller, with slightly arching branches occurring naturally along the east coast of Australia from Bundaberg, QLD, to near Grafton, NSW, extending into inland Central QLD between the Blackdown Tableland (west of Rockhampton) and the Alpha-Tambo area (north of Charleville).The bright green phyllodes end in a rounded tip, stems are "winged" giving them a flattened appearance, with the flowers being the most attractive feature which are large bright yellow balls held in dense or open groups with a very light perfume.While flowering occurs mainly from late Spring until Summer, it often blooms at other times of the year.In the wild it normally grows in sand, gravel and loam, usually over sandstone, in dry sclerophyll forest and heath.An excellent species for the suburban garden that is best pruned to shape.This species is suitable for warm humid tropical and subtropical locations. It can make an attractive hedge or low windbreak and attracts bees, insects and birds.
